Anyiam, Rams get first win; split games at Cabrillo tourney

APTOS – Career win No. 1 for new Gavilan College men's basketball head coach Henry Anyiam is officially in the books.

Sophomore Fabian Reichstadt had a huge game in his 2023-24 season debut, posting a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds, to help lead the Rams to an 86-63 victory over San Joaquin Delta College on Friday at the Cabrillo College Tip-Off Classic.

Unfortunately, the Rams couldn't keep the momentum going and suffered a narrow 76-72 loss to Mendocino College on Saturday to close out the two-day event.

On Friday, Gavilan took a slim 36-33 lead into halftime before the Rams turned it on in the second. Gavilan outscored Delta 50-30 over the final 20 minutes to cruise to the rout.

CJ Toppin joined Reichstadt with a double-double against the Mustangs as he totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gavilan also got double-digit scoring from Kenny Harper Jr (14 points) and Bricen Buciak (12 points).

Gavilan went into halftime against Mendocino on Saturday trailing 41-36. Despite outscoring the Eagles 36-35 in the second, the deficit was too much to overcome.

Reichstadt put together another solid game with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

Cameron Saldana led the Rams with 16 points to go with 7 rebounds. Buciak nearly had another double-double with 15 points and 8 boards while Isaiah Hinds totaled 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Gavilan, now 1-1 overall, returns to tournament action on Friday (Nov. 10) when the Rams will compete at the two-day Hinson's Tire Pros Winter Classic at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. Gavilan is schedule to face host Cuesta on Friday at 7 p.m. and will take on Allan Hancock College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
