Men's Basketball takes 2nd Place at San Bernardino Valley's Alvin Hunter Classic

Men's Basketball traveled to San Bernardino Valley College to compete in the high powered Alvin Hunter Classic and came back in second place. Just to note, 5 of the 8 teams were ranked in the top 20.

Game one saw the Raiders take on Last Chance U and perennial state power East LA. The Raiders used a 9 point run early in the first to take a 19-6 lead. East LA turned the tables going on a 12-0 run to trim MC's lead to one, 19-18. Jamaal Unuakalu ended the nearly 5 minute drought with dunk. The rest of the half was a boxing match as both teams went on a series of mini runs to keep each other close. East LA took their only lead at the 5:15 mark but 2 minutes later, the Raiders re-took the lead on another Unuakalu jam and the Riaders took a 42-39 halftime lead. Both teams traded leads early and with the Raiders trailing 44-45, Avi Harpert stole the ball and dished it to Kenji Cooper, who drained a corner 3 and the Raiders never looked back. Jamaal Unuakalu led all scorers with 27 points and 8 rebounds, Avi Harper had a double-doouble, 18 points with 12 assists, Kenji Cooper chipped in 16 points, Jack Benyshek added 11 points.

The Raiders and Wildcats played the second evenly with the Raiders topping West LA, 103-92, to take their place in the championship game. It was the J & J Show as Jack Benyshek had a game high 27 points, Jamaal Unuakalu had a double-double, 24 points and 14 rebounds. Avi Halpert added 15 points.

In a surprise, to most, the Raiders were taking on another State perennial power, San Francisco City. In the first four minutes, the Raiders took a 9-5 lead which seemed to irk the Rams and SFCC went on a 20-8 run to take a 25-17 lead. The Raiders responded with a 21-8 run of their to cut the SFCC lead to 6 points. SF responded to take a 45-40 halftime lead. The second half started with the Rams lead ballooning to 12 and holding back the Raiders for most of the half. The Raiders were able to cut the lead to four with under a minute but ran out of time, 90-84 SFCC. Once again it was the J & J Show as Jack Benyshek had a game high 23 points, Jamaal Unuakalu had a double-double, 21 points, 11 rebounds. Avi Harpert added 16 points with 5 assists. Jeremiah Windham added 11 points. Benyshek and Unuakalu were named to the All-Tournament team as well.
