Hall of Fame Coach Passes Away
Nunes led DeAnza from 1967 to 1991
Hall of Fame coach Tony Nunes passed away on New Year's Day. Nunes, who was inducted into the California Community Colleges Men's Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990, was DeAnza's coach from 1967 to 1991. He concluded his career with a 480-262 record, mkaing him the College's winningest baseketball coach at DeAnza. Nunes also served as the College's athletic director. He was 91 years of age.
"He was a great teacher, administrator and mentor," Jason Damjanovic, current instructor at DeAnza, said. "He was always willing to provide advice even after his coaching days at De Anza were over. This is a tremendous loss not only for the basketball program but the department and institution."
Nunes, the College's first men's basketball coach, won five conference championships. Six times, he was selected as the conference's coach of the year. He also served as the Association's president.
