No. 3 Hawks down Cañada 89-72, Round 2 showdown vs. CCSF coming up Friday

REDWOOD CITY --- Freshman A.J. Gilbert scored a season-high 17 points to help lead No. 3 state-ranked Las Positas College to an 89-72 Coast Conference North Division victory at Cañada College on Wednesday night.

The win sets up another thrilling matchup between the Hawks and No. 1 City College of San Francisco on Friday (Feb. 18) in Livermore. After leading at halftime, Las Positas faltered in the second and eventually suffered an 89-79 loss in San Francisco in the two teams' first meeting on January 26.

The Hawks, now 10-1 in Coast North Division play, need a win against the unbeaten Rams (13-0) to have a shot of at least a share of the conference title.

First, LPC had to take care of business at Cañada. The Hawks got off to another big lead and was up 52-34 at the break before cruising in the second half.

Gilbert easily surpassed his previous season-best of 5 points, as he came off the bench to shoot 7 for 12, including a trio of three-pointers, on his way to a team-high 17 points.

Malik Jackson added 16 points, Isaiah Victor scored 14 points, and Brandon Fisher chipped in with 12 points.

Las Positas has won seven straight to improve to 23-2 overall.
