Sufyan Elkannan's career-high 31 points fueled West Valley to a dominant 122-87 win over Gavilan Friday in Saratoga. Elkannan opened the game with back-to-back threes on WVC's first two posessions for a 6-0 less than a minute in. Ben Baker hit from long distance the next time down the court, followed by a two from Adam Afifi and a pair of buckets from Malik Patton to counter a pair of three-pointers from Gavilan's Jaylin Williams and give the Vikings a 15-6 lead at the 16:35 mark.

The hot-shooting Rams stayed within striking distance throughout the fast-paced first half, but were not able to overcome Elkannan's 19 and Baker's 17 points. Elkannan's fourth three-pointer of the half with 1:32 left stretched West Valley's lead to 59-43, but a two from Suheil Ibrahin and a three from Tahjae Ordonio closed the gap to 59-48 at the buzzer.

Williams brought the Rams (9-8, 0-1 Coast-South) to within 59-50 on the opening posession of the second half, but Gavilan would get no closer. Elkannan drained a three on the next posession, and back-to-back dunks from Mahmoud Fofana and a two from Elkannan gave WVC an insurmountable 68-50 advantage at 17:10. Viking big man Adam Afifi then caught fire, scoring 15 points in the next ten minutes. Afifi made it 101-73 with a jump hook just inside the 8:00 mark and the two teams raced to the finish with the Vikings (14-3, 2-0) outscoring the Rams 21-14 to close out the entertaining game.

Elkannan's game-high 31 included five three-pointers and 12 field goals. Baker finished with 23 points, while Fofana had 18, Afifi 17 and Quinn Denker 13. Williams led the Rams with 21.

West Valley hits the road this week for a pair of important Coast contests. The Vikings travel to Monterey Peninsula (12-3, 1-0) Wednesday (1/19) and then to Salinas Friday (1/21) to take on Hartnell (7-8, 1-0). Both games tip off at 7:00pm.
