Shelly and Crew Roll Past Imperial Valley

Jordan Shelly drives to the basket.

In their first conference game of the year the Spartan men's basketball team showed up and looked strong.  With the win MiraCosta is 1-0 in conference play, taking their place at the top of the standings early in the season.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 12-3 lead behind a pair of three point shots from Julian Williams.  Imperial Valley sat in a zone defense for most of the game but that didn't deter MiraCosta.  Behind their quality ball movement and timely dribble drives the Spartans got  any shot they wanted.  Sophomore forward Carter Plousha was an important part of the zone attack catching the ball at the high post and making passes to cutting teammates.

MiraCosta had five players in double digit scoring and nine players score in the game, but the player of the night was freshman guard Jordan Shelly.  His relentless attacks to the basket got him nine high percentage made shots and four trips to the fould line.  Shelly led all scorers with 24 points.  Jonathan Tchengang added 12 points and mulitple high energy plays that got the Spartans momentum to build on.  Plousha and Williams both added 11 points while Jayln White scored 10.

The point guard crew of Lamont Couch Jr., Jayden Winfrey and Jordan Campbell kept the pace of the game where MiraCosta wanted it.  The Spartans created easy points in transition with the point guards using their speed and the throw ahead pass on fast break opportunities.

MiraCosta is next in action on Friday at home, tip off is at 6PM. The game can be watched on YouTube Live and you can find the link on the team's Schedule/Results page.
