SCC Falls short in 1st Home Loss since February, 2019

The SCC Men's Basketball Team entered Friday Night's contest on a three game winning streak. Their opponent was Mira Costa College, who was ranked 19th in the coaches' preseason poll. The game was close throughout, but the Hawks were able to grab a 12 point lead with 6:20 left in the game. Unfortunately, SCC couldn't hang on and Mira Costa came away with a three point victory by the score of 78-75. With the loss, the Hawks record is now 3-1 on the season. It was the first home loss for Santiago Canyon since February 12, 2019.
The first half was close throughout and Mira Costa had a 39-38 advantage at the intermission. David Agba led the way in scoring with 10 points in the half, while Preston Sims added 9 points. Agba also grabbed 6 rebounds in the half. The Hawks only managed to shoot 3 for 16 from the three-point line in the half, but did manage to secure 7 offensive rebounds.
The second half opened with SCC starting to connect on some shots and gradually built a small lead. With about 6 minutes to play, the team held what looked like a comfortable 12 point lead. But Mira Costa made some timely plays, forced some turnovers and managed to grab a one point lead with under 30 seconds to play. After another SCC turnover, Mira Costa connected on two free throws to extend their lead to 3 points. The Hawks were able to get a look from the three-point line as the buzzer sounded, but the shot fell just short. Leading Scorers for SCC were Sims (18), Agba (15), Aaron Wadman (14), and Erik Howlin (13). Wadman finished with a career high 11 rebounds to lead both teams. Shooting and untimely turnovers were the catalyst for defeat for the Hawks. The team shot 5 for 27 (18.5%) from three and 6 for 14 (42.9%) from the free throw line. SCC also committed 19 turnovers on the night. SCC will look to rebound from the loss with a road game at Southwestern College on Saturday, November 20. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
