Cougars Snap Streak with 85-83 OT Victory at AVC

By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director

LANCASTER — College of the Canyons freshman King Miller hit a jump shot with five seconds remaining to overtime to help the Cougars get past host Antelope Valley College 85-83 on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Miller finished the game with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench, but saved his most important contributions for the game's closing seconds.

Following his clutch jumper, Miller was credited with blocking an AVC layup that could have sent the game to a second OT period.

Canyons (10-9, 2-5) also received big performances from scoring leader Andrew Henderson and fellow starters Jimmy Galgano and Dillon Barrientos.

Henderson finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead the game in both categories.

Barrientos came away with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. His 11 points down the stretch in the second half were crucial for COC.

Galgano added 13 points and four assists and Zion Caston contributed with 10 points and four boards in a reserve role.

Antelope Valley (8-12, 1-6) had built a 48-29 halftime advantage and looked to be in clear control heading into the second half.

The Cougars responded, however, by shooting better than 48 percent from field after the break to get back into the game.

COC took a brief 76-74 lead with 17 seconds left in regulation after Galgano delivered on a pair of free throws. The Marauders tied the game once more at 76-76 before Caston's final jumper missed the mark and put the game in OT.

Miller's four points in the overtime period helped put the Cougars over the top for a much-needed conference victory.

Canyons is back in action Monday, Jan. 31 vs. L.A. Valley in a road contest that was originally scheduled for Jan. 12.

COC then returns home to the Cougar Cage at 5 p.m. Wednesday vs. Santa Monica.
