Balanced Scoring Helps Spartans Pull Away In Second Half

After a slow first half the MiraCosta men's basketball team found themselves tied with the Grossmont Griffins.  Freshman Devyn Wakefield was active for the Spartans with 10 first half points but no other player had more than two field goals. In the second half sophomores Marcus Foster and Dirk Helaire II carried MiraCosta scoring a combined 21 second half points to pull away and secure the 66-51 win. With the win the Spartans improve to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

The Griffins kept it close for about thirty minutes but then with the combination of Helaire II attacking the rin and Foster shooting from the perimeter MiraCosta extended the lead to comfortably finish the game.  In the last two minutes Wakefield put an exclamation point on the win with a dynamic dunk assisted by Lamont Couch Jr

Defensively the Spartans were stellar holding their opponents to 51 points.  Sophmore Donald Smith helped inspire the defense by taking four charges.

MiraCosta is next in action on Wednesday at Miramar College for a 6PM tipoff.
