No. 6 West LA opens season with convincing win over Pierce

The West Los Angeles College men's basketball team made a triumphant return to the court. On Thursday, West LA cruised to a 108-77 victory over LA Pierce College to open the 2021-22 season at the O'Fallon and Singui Classic Showcase at Santa Monica College.

West LA, ranked No. 6 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) Southern California Preseason Rankings, will next face No. 3 San Bernardino Valley College on Saturday (Nov. 6) at 4 p.m. to close out the two-day event at SMC.

On Thursday, the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-3 early lead and never looked back. An 11-2 run by West LA midway through the first half gave it a 34-17 advantage that wouldn't be challenged. The Wildcats took a 47-31 lead into halftime.

The second half saw sophomore TJ Waldon take over. He scored all of his 15 points over the final 20 minutes, shooting a perfect 7 for 7 from the floor. He grabbed five rebounds and had three steals.

Matthew Mayes led the Wildcats on the day with 17 points to go with 4 assists, three rebounds, 3 steals, and a block. Roy Clarke added 13 points and Justin Williams had 11.
