Comets Lock Down San Diego Mesa, Snap Skid with Key Conference Win
SAN MARCOS, CA (1/31/2025) -- After a tough three-game losing streak, the Palomar College men's basketball team bounced back with a crucial 57-48 victory over San Diego Mesa College on Friday night at the Dome. The Comets improved to 14-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play, holding strong in fourth place as they enter a pivotal stretch of road games.
Palomar's defense set the tone early, holding Mesa to just 17 first-half points while building a 31-17 lead at the break. Though the Olympians fought back in the second half, shooting 48.3% after struggling in the first, the Comets maintained their composure and made key plays down the stretch to secure the win.
Isaiah Pomare led the charge with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds and recording two blocks. Avant Gilmore provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds, helping keep Palomar in control as Mesa tried to mount a comeback.
Jaidyn Norman contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Max Zylicz also reached double figures with 10 points and seven boards. The Comets' depth proved valuable, with the bench chipping in 23 points in the win.
Though Palomar shot just 31.3% from the field and 29.4% from three, their defensive intensity made the difference. The Comets forced 17 turnovers and recorded eight steals, limiting Mesa's scoring opportunities and keeping their own offense in command.
Now back in the win column, Palomar looks to keep the momentum going with two key road games this week. The Comets will travel to face Cuyamaca College on Wednesday night before taking on San Diego Miramar College on Friday. With the conference race tightening, these matchups will be crucial as Palomar continues its push up the standings.
