No. 7 West LA knocks off No. 5 SBVC in Wild West Shootout final

No. 7 state-ranked West Los Angeles won two more games over the weekend, including a narrow 76-74 victory over No. 5 San Bernardino Valley College in the championship final of the Wild West Shootout on Saturday. The Wildcats reached the finals after an 87-81 win over a tough Compton College squad on Friday.

West LA has won five straight games and improved to 8-1 overall.

The Wildcats faced San Bernardino Valley for the third time this season, with West LA winning two of those contests.

Trailing 66-63, West LA's Ethelbert Anum's layup and free throw at the 4:54 mark tied up the game. Matthew Mayes' three-pointer with 4:15 to play gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

West LA built a 74-67 advantage but had to hold off a late SBVC rally. The Wolverines got within one point with just 15 seconds remaining and missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.

Roy Clarke and Khalifah Muhammad both scored 13 points each to lead West LA. Mayes posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Gavin Davis added 11 points.

Just as in the SBVC game, West LA had to withstand a late surge by Compton on Friday. A Compton three-pointer with a minute to play got the Tartars within three-points at 81-78. But the Wildcats scored the next six points to secure the win.

West LA had five score in double figures, led by 13 points from Justin Williams. Clarke and Kalique Mitchell scored 11 points each while Davis and Joseph Anderson both had 10 points.

Following the championship final, Davis was named the Wild West Shootout MVP. Clarke and Mayes were selected to the All-Tournament team.

West LA returns to tournament action on Thursday (Dec. 9) when it will compete at the three-day Fullerton College Classic. The Wildcats are set to face No. 10 state-ranked College of the Sequoias at 5 p.m. in their opening game. A win would likely match up West LA against state No. 1 Fullerton on Friday.
