College of the Canyons won the season-opening 'Clash at Canyons' Tip-Off Event with a two-game run that culminated in the Cougars' 116-84 victory over Barstow College on Saturday in the Cougar Cage.
Canyons (2-0) began the four-team tournament with a 102-82 win over Oxnard College on Thursday night. In the bracket's championship game, COC was matched up with Barstow (1-1) after the Vikings earned a 77-71 win over Cuyamaca College (1-2) in the tourney opener.
COC freshman Andrew Henderson posted a big game for the Cougars, finishing with 25 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. He was 9-of-13 from the floor en route to earning tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
In Thursday's game vs. Oxnard, Henderson logged a stat line of nine points, 10 rebounds and two assists while coming off the bench.
Canyons also received a big weekend from freshman Jimmy Galgano who ended the game vs. Barstow with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a reserve role. Galgano started Thursday's game and posted similar results with 13 points on a 6-of-8 shooting night, to go with nine assists, a block, a steal and an assist.
Galgano joined Henderson in being named to the all-tournament team.
The 'Clash at Canyons' All-Tournament Team also included sophomore Christian Taylor and freshman Askari Bruce from Barstow, Cuyamaca sophomore Ray King and freshman James Webster of Oxnard.
Canyons has now won its hosted tournament in back-to-back years after also winning the 2019 version of the event, which was hosted at Oxnard College due to ongoing renovations at the Cougar Cage. The 'Clash at Canyons' was not held in 2020 due to cancellations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Cougars had six players score in double figures vs. Barstow. That deep rotation also led to 55 bench points for the Cougars.
Dillon Barrientos scored 12 points with King Miller, Aaron Reyes and Isaiah Conlan each adding 11. As a team, Canyons shot better than 54 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Vikings 57-34.
The Cougars are next in action at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 vs. Cerritos College at the San Juan Hills Toyota Classic hosted by Irvine Valley College.
COC will then play back-to-back games for the first time this season with a scheduled contest on Friday coming with time and opponent TBD based on tournament results.
