West Valley and Monterey Peninsula traded buckets for 40 minutes until the Lobos went cold at the end and the Vikings held on for a crucial 62-60 win Wednesday night in Saratoga. Trailing 61-60, MPC failed to convert on three straight possessions inside the final minute and, forced to foul, sent Johnny Oudewaal to the line with just over a second left. Oudewaal converted the front end and the Lobos were unable to get a desperation shot off at the buzzer. The win, coupled with Hartnell's 96-89 loss to Gavilan, moved the Vikings (15-12, 6-5 Coast-South) into sole possession of 3rd place in the conference heading into Friday's regular-season home finale against Cabrillo (15-10, 8-3). West Valley, Hartnell and MPC were deadlocked at 5-5 in the Coast-South prior to Wednesday with playoff berths at stake for all three teams. Monterey (14-13, 5-6) and Hartnell (13-12, 5-6) face off Friday at Hartnell. Cristian Mejia had a game-high 18 points to lead the Vikings, followed by Delvon Nisby with 17 and Devante Johnson with 13. Marcus Wallace paced MPC with 16. West Valley and Cabrillo tip off Friday at 7:00pm.
