No. 5 Hawks battle but come up short at No. 1 CCSF

SAN FRANCISCO --- The effort was there but ultimately No. 5 state-ranked Las Positas College ran out of gas and saw its 16-game winning streak come to an end with an 89-79 Coast Conference North Division loss at No. 1 City College of San Francisco on Wednesday night.

The Hawks led for the majority of the contest but couldn't finish out the win against a deep Rams squad.

LPC opened with an 8-0 surge, was up 12-1, and held its biggest lead of 30-13 after a three-pointer by Jorren Edmonds with nine minutes to play in the first half. CCSF (20-1, 7-0 CCND) finally got some shots to fall and responded with an 8-0 run to get within seven points at 32-25.

The Rams would eventually tie up the game with nine seconds remaining, but Jordahn Johnson's layup just before the halftime buzzer sent the Hawks into the break with a narrow 41-39 advantage.

Las Positas held off CCSF in the second, but a three-pointer by the Rams' Ezekiel Holman at the 13:15 mark gave them their first lead of the game at 56-53. The two squads exchanged leads over the next eight minutes and with the score tied up at 73-73, the Rams pulled away for good with an 11-2 run.

Johnson and Malik Jackson both scored 17 points to lead Las Positas. Johnson added 8 rebounds while Jackson had three boards and 2 assists. Lee Jones, Jr. posted 14 points and 6 assists and Dathan Satchell contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.

The Hawks are the last team to defeat CCSF in conference action, a win that dates back to the 2016-17 season. Las Positas will get one more chance at the Rams as the two squads are also scheduled to close out the regular season on Feb. 18 in Livermore.

Las Positas, now 16-2 overall and 3-1 in Coast Conference North Division play, will next host Ohlone College on Friday (Jan. 28) at 7 p.m.
