SCC Improves to 5-1 on the Season with Strong Effort over Mt. San Antonio
Santiago Canyon College’s Men’s Basketball Team went into the Thanksgiving Holiday with a victory over Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday night at home.
Santiago Canyon College's Men's Basketball Team went into the Thanksgiving Holiday with a victory over Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday night at home. The Hawks played strong defense and executed on offense to secure an 89-71 win. With the win, SCC improves its record to 5-1 on the season. The victory also snapped a 5-game winning streak by Mt. SAC, whose record is now 5-2. The Hawks used a strong first half performance to create a comfortable lead and then played from ahead the rest of the game.
SCC's strong first half included a balanced scoring attack with eight different players scoring. Preston Sims and Aaron Wadman paced the Hawks with 9 points apiece. Cameron Calcote came off the bench and added 8 points, while Luke Guzman connected on a pair of three-pointers for 6 points. Overall, Santiago Canyon shot 51.4% from the field and made eight 3-pointers in the half. They also held Mt. SAC to 40.7% shooting with a swarming defense. The score at the half was 45-25 in favor of the Hawks.
The second half opened with Mt. SAC making a run at SCC over the first seven minutes and cut the lead to 12, but the Hawks bounced back and grew the lead back to the 20-point spread from halftime. SCC ended the game shooting 50.8% from the floor and made 11 of 29 three-pointers. The Hawks were led in scoring by Sims with 22, Wadman with 17, Drew Yezbak with 13, Erik Howlin with 11, and Calcote with 10. The balanced scoring attack continues to be a strong advantage for SCC. Sims also led the team in rebounding with 8 and assists with 4. Sims and Howlin both had 3 steals on the night as well.
SCC will return to action pretty quick after the Thanksgiving break with a home game on Monday, November 29th vs. Copper Mountain. This game was rescheduled earlier in the season. SCC, currently ranked #9 in the CCCMBCA Poll, will look to build upon their winning streak. Tip-off is set for 5pm on Monday.
