Mounties easily defeat Rio Hondo, 95-76, in SCC North game

(Whittier, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Basketball team won its third consecutive game and ninth out of the last 10, with a 95-76 win over host Rio Hondo College on Wednesday (Feb. 9) in a South Coast Conference North game.

With the win, the Mounties improved to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference, to remain in second place. Only four games remain in the regular season before the CCCAA playoffs begin in the first week of March.

Leading the way for Mt. SAC with a game-high 21 points was freshman guard Shaquil Bender (8-19 FGM-A, 2-7 3PM-A, 3-3 FTM-A, 4 RB, 2 A, Stl.). Two other players were in double figures for the Mounties – sophomore forward Keith Stewart (2-3 FGM-A, 3 RB, Stl.) with 18 points and freshman forward Christian Jones (7-8 FGM-A, 6 RB, 1A, 1 Stl., 1 Blk.) with 14.

As a team, the Mounties out rebounded Rio Hondo, 42-25, and raced out to a 48-32 first-half lead. They were led by Jones and sophomore guard Khalid Wilkins (3-4 FGM-A, 1-1 3PM-A, 1-2 FTM-A, 1A) with eight points each in the first half.

The Mounties host L.A. Trade Tech on Friday (Feb. 11) for an SCC North game.
