Solano nips Vaqueros 84-83 in double overtime

Kile Kleiner scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Thursday night but it wasn't enough as Solano slipped past SBCC 84-83 in a double-overtime thriller at the 29th annual Monterey Bay Classic men's basketball tournament.

Kleiner hit 5-14 from 3-point land and the Vaqueros shot 27.6% from long distance (8-29). Kleiner, a 6-5 guard from Hayward, leads the team in scoring at 17.2 per game.

Zeke McMurtry added 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Vaqueros (1-4), who trailed 37-28 at halftime and rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to tie it at 62 and force overtime.

Joseph Holden, a 6-foot freshman from Oakland, scored a season-high 19 points with six rebounds and five steals. Michael Green had seven of his team's 17 assists.

Courtlund McLean led the Falcons (1-5) with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Solano outshot the Vaqueros 50.0 to 22.5% in the first half and 42.4 to 33.0% for the game.

After falling behind 40-28 on the opening basket of the second half, Santa Barbara outscored Solano by 16 points and took a four-point lead.

In the first OT, the Vaqueros went to the free-throw line with the score tied and 2.1 seconds left but missed both shots.

The Vaqueros had the ball with 20 seconds left and the score tied at 83 in the second extra five-minute session. After a turnover and a foul, Solano made the second of two free throws for the game-winning point.

The Vaqueros will take on Cypress in a consolation semifinal on Friday at 3 p.m.
