Men’s Basketball: Rio Hondo can’t keep up with No. 3 East Los Angeles

For 20 minutes, Rio Hondo College held its own against No. 3 state-ranked East Los Angeles. But the Huskies proved true to their ranking and went on to a 107-79 South Coast Conference North Division win over the Roadrunners in Monterey Park on Wednesday night.

Lamin Williams' three-pointer with 1:05 left in the first half gave Rio Hondo a 45-43 lead. But East Los Angeles (23-1, 4-0 SCC) closed out the period with a pair of buckets to go into halftime with a narrow 47-45 lead.

The Huskies turned it on in the second, opening with an 11-0 run to take a commanding 58-45 lead. The Roadrunners did their best to get back in it, as Bryant Howing nailed a three pointer before Darrin Curtis made back-to-back three-point baskets as well to make the score 60-54. But Rio Hondo would get no closer.

Howing led the Roadrunners with 21 points, thanks to 5 three-pointers. Williams scored 16 points while Curtis added 14 points.

Rio Hondo fell to 3-21 overall and 0-4 in SCC North Division play. The Roadrunners will look to snap a season-long losing streak on Friday (Feb. 7) when they travel to face Mt. San Antonio College for a 7 p.m. SCC North game.
