SBVC Felled by Sequoias in Elite 8

The San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team had its run to a state championship come to an end Friday night, as they fell to College of the Sequoias 69-62 at West Hills College in Lemoore.

Both teams struggled in the first half, as the teams went to the break with the Giants leading 25-21 after 20 minutes. Sequoias only made 34.6 percent of its shots, while SBVC only made 31.6 percent from the field.

In the second half, the Giants found their range, as Ryan Johnson heated up for Sequoias. The sophomore guard/forward was 6-for-7 in the second half – including 5-of-5 from three-point range - allowing the Giants to open a lead up to 11 points.

SBVC rallied, and got back within four, but couldn't penetrate the Giants' defense in the paint, as Sequoias was credited with eight blocked shots in the game.

Armon Muldrew led the way for SBVC, with 24 points. Chester Makoi had another double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. The rest of the SBVC offense was held in check, as the Wolverines ended the game shooting 37.1 percent from the field. SBVC also struggled at the free throw line, only making 12 of 19 shots from the stripe.

The Wolverines' defense was strong throughout, forcing 21 turnovers by Sequoias, and making nine steals.

Johnson led all scorers with 30 points.
