Hawks knock off Columbia to advance to state championships for first time

SONORA – A historic 2021-22 Las Positas College men's basketball season will continue into uncharted territory. With Saturday night's 62-53 third-round Northern California playoffs win at No. 4 Columbia College, the No. 5-seeded Hawks punched their ticket to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships for the first time in school history.

The top four teams from the North and South regions will compete at the three-day state tournament that gets underway on Friday (Mar. 11) at West Hills College Lemoore in the Central Valley.

Ticket prices for the state championships at West Hills Lemoore's Golden Eagle Arena are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children under 12 years old. Advanced tickets are now available for purchase online at the CCCAA website.

Las Positas was named the North's No. 4 seed for the state tourney and will take on South No. 1-seed West Los Angeles College in the men's quarterfinals on Friday at 1 p.m.

The Hawks head to Lemoore with a 27-3 overall record after Saturday's win over Columbia. Las Positas trailed 36-33 at halftime but outscored the Claim Jumpers 29-17 over the final 20 minutes to complete the come-from-behind victory.

Jordahn Johnson had a monster game with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead LPC in the win. For Johnson, it was his 16th double-double in 28 games this season.

Dathan Satchell scored 14 points while Lee Jones, Jr. added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.

West LA surges into the state championships having won 19 straight games and is 27-3 overall. The Wildcats, seeded second for the Southern California playoffs, defeated No. 15 San Diego Miramar College and No. 7 East Los Angeles College to earn their spot at the state tournament.

The Wildcats, under head coach Anthony Jones, are also making their first-ever appearance at the state championships this season.
