Vikings cage Seahawks to cap 24-4 regular season

The West Valley basketball team ended the regular season with a methodical 74-58 win over visiting Cabrillo. The victory gave the state #7 Vikings (24-4, 10-2 Coast South) a third consecutive season series sweep of the Highway 17 rival Seahawks (13-14, 5-7) and a second-place Coast-South finish one game back of San Jose City College (24-4, 11-1).

The Vikings and the Seahawks battled back and forth for the majority of the first half before Cabrillo grabbed its last lead of the game at 21-20 with 6:05 remaining. The Vikings then went on a 10-4 run on a three from Ariya Briscoe and seven straight points from Elijah Mahi for a 35-25 lead at the break.

Jeremiah Dargan made sure the lead would hold as he scored 14 second-half points on three treys and five points from the stripe. One of Dargan's threes gave WVC its largest lead of the game at 59-41 with 7:16 to go. The Vikings then held the Seahawks without a point from 5:07 to 1:18 and scored their final ten points on free throws.

Dargan finished with a game-high 19 points, along with five assists and a pair of steals. Mahi's tallied 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, while Briscoe had eight points, five boards, four helpers, a steal and a block.

The Vikings ended the regular season outscoring opponents 80.2 to 60.6 and outrebounding their foes 41.6 to 26.8. Mahi averaged a team-high 16.9 points-per-game (PPG), along with 6.8 rebounds-per-game (RPG), 2.9 assist-per-game (APG) and a team-high 1.1 blocks-per-game (BPG).  Dargan finished with 13.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 3.9 APG and 1.5 steals-per-game, both team highs. Malik Patton led the Vikings with 7.4 RPG.

Playoff seedings will be announced this weekend, with WVC expected to host a first-round contest Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:00pm.
