For the first time since 2005-2006, the West Valley basketball team has won back-to-back Coast Conference championships. Friday night's 75-68 win at second-place San Jose City gave the Vikings (23-3, 11-0 Coast-South) the outright title with one game to go in the regular season. But, it wasn't easy against a talented Jaguar squad.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the opening half, before the Vikings took a 42-35 lead into the locker room. Ben Baker hit a pair of threes to finish the half with 11 points, while Quinn Denker had a trio of layups to finish with ten.

West Valley went on its patented second-half run, outscoring the Jaguars (22-5, 8-3) 15-2 for a 57-37 lead with 13:00 left. The lead was 62-43 at the 10:03 mark when WVC went cold and SJCC went on a run of its own. The Jaguars came all the way back to within 69-62 with 2:32 to go. The score was 69-66 when Mahmoud Fofana rammed in a dunk off a Baker behind-the-back feed for a 71-66 WVC advantage. Denker drained a pair of free throws for a 73-66 lead with 45.2 to go.

San Jose's David Galentine hit a bucket to make it 73-68. After a Jaguar steal, Fofana had the defensive play of the game, swatting away Justice Owens' three-point attempt. The ball was grabbed by Adam Afifi, who was fouled and then converted both charity attempts with 16.7 seconds to go for the final 75-68 tally.

All five Viking starters reached double figures in scoring, led by Denker's 19. Baker had a loud 16, while Afifi finished with 14 and Fofana and Sufyan Elkannan had 10 apiece. Jaycson Bereal led the Jaguars with 17.

West Valley finishes the regular season on Friday, Feb. 25 against Cabrillo (15-10, 6-3), who have make-up games to play Monday and Wednesday. Friday's tipoff is 5:00pm.
