Men's basketball team beats Canyons in classic opener

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team started off its 25th Annual San Juan Hills Toyota Classic with a solid win on Thursday night.

The Lasers defeated Canyons, 68-49, to move into the title game on Friday at 6 p.m. against Cerritos.

Cerritos topped Ventura, 70-43, in the first game on Thursday.

Ventura will take on Canyons in a consolation game at 4 p.m. Friday.

Thursday's win for the Lasers also moved their record to 3-0 overall on the year.

It is the first time IVC has been 3-0 to start a season since the 2016-17 campaign.

Irvine Valley led from start to finish on Friday.

It jumped out to a 11-2 lead on a layup by freshman point guard JT Robinson and never looked back.

The Lasers took a 31-21 lead into halftime and led by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Robinson had his best game so far as a Laser. Attacking off the dribble consistently all night, Robinson finished with a game-high 20 points. He also added nine rebounds.

Sophomore wing Christian Louis added 13 points, freshman forward Jesse Stines made three three-pointers and ended with 10 points, sophomore forward Austin Carter chipped in eight points and six rebounds and freshman forward Colby Waite had five points and nine rebounds for IVC.

The Lasers dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Canyons, 54-26, including 15-5 on the offensive end. Four players had at least seven rebounds with freshman forward Chazz Hutchison adding eight and sophomore forward Aashad Womack contributing seven.

The Lasers will have to be more careful with the ball. They did end up with 24 turnovers.

Irvine Valley ended up shooting 44.1 percent (26 of 59) from the field and helped hold Canyons to just 29.6 percent (16 of 54). Canyons was 0 of 15 on three-point attempts.

Christopher Bradford and Zach Phipps paced Canyons with 14 points apiece. The Cougars' record dropped to 2-2 on the season.
