Pirates split at Palomar tournament

SAN MARCOS -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team earned a two-game split over the Thanksgiving weekend by topping Imperial Valley, 94-88, before losing to Palomar, 79-70, at the Palomar College Tournament.

In Friday's win against Imperial Valley, Jydon Hall led the Pirates (4-4) with 29 points, while Aundrel Pua added 25 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Logen Howard added 17 points, five rebounds and three steals, while off the bench, Ty Barker came through with 11 points and four rebounds.

With Coast hanging on to a 1-point lead late in the second half, the Pirates used an 8-1 push over a 3-minute span to push their advantage to 82-75 with 4:31 remaining. IVC got to within a par at 82-80 before a clutch 3-pointer by Hall pushed the advantage back up to give at 85-80. That would be a close as Imperial Valley would get the rest of the way as the Pirates earned their fourth win of the season.

Against the Comets on Saturday, Hall led the way with 15 pints, while Barker added 12. Trent Williams tossed in 11 points, while Pua and Howard each contributed 10.

Trailing 64-59 with 7:47 left in the game, Coast found some offensive success and used a 9-4 run to tie things at 68 with 4:24 remaining.

But the points were hard to come by down the stretch as Palomar (5-1) closed the game out with an 11-2 run.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at home against Miramar College, beginning at 4:30 p.m. the same two teams will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
