Pirates end home schedule in style with 84-71 win over Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team is showing its heart these final few games of the 2021-22 season as the Pirates won their third straight by beating rival Golden West, 84-71, on Monday night inside the Peterson Gym.

In a season of struggles, the Pirates could have easily given up on the remaining few games, but they've continued to pay hard and now, that hard work is paying off with three straight wins ... two coming against the rival Rustlers.

In one of the most balanced games the Pirates have played all season, five different OCC players reached double figures, including Logen Howard, who led the way with 18 points.

Aundrel Pua -- one of three sophomores honored before Monday's game along with J.J. Chapple and injured sophomore Colby Reese -- added 17 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while Jydon Hall added 14 points and five assists. Cody Aquino supplied 13 points, while Trent Williams came off the bench and scored 11 points. Chapple finished his final night in the Peterson Gym with nine points, four rebounds and five assists.

Coast hit 15 3-pointers for the night and that proved to be the difference in the game. GWC's Eric Watson led the Rustlers with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Leading 42-38 in a close game with the Rustlers, Coast pulled away over a five-minute span of the second half, outscoring GWC 13-2 to grab a 55-40 advantage.

The lead continued to grow from there and the Pirates were never threatened again.
