Comets fall to MiraCosta in a close one

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/31/2020) – Palomar faced MiraCosta College Friday night and lost 61-58 in a hard-fought battle.

The Comets and Spartans were neck and neck the entire game. At halftime, Palomar was down one point, 30-29 as both teams were identical in their shooting percentages. In the end, MiraCosta won the rebounding game nabbing 37 to Palomar's 31. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but the Spartans scored two more points, 19 total, off the turnovers. The Comets were nearly perfect at the free-throw line going 10-11 to MiraCosta's 11-17.

Anthony Brewer had 22 points, a season-high for the sophomore, against the Spartans in his first game back. He was 8-16 in the field, going 3-6 at the arc, and was a perfect 3-3 at the charity stripe. He also racked up two defensive rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jacob Durham, who usually leads the team in rebounds, had just two on the night to along with one steal and 10 points. Zadok Wilson was the team's leading rebounder nabbing 10, nine defensive and one offensive, to go along with two points. Anthony Smith also had a big defensive night as he crashed the boards for nine rebounds, had one steal and two blocks to along with 11 points and one assist. In his first career start, Chris Howard had five rebounds, two assists, three steals, a block and four points.

The Comets are now 16-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The men will be on the road all next week with games at Grossmont (Feb. 5) and Southwestern (Feb. 7). Both games will tip at 7 p.m.
