Johnson, Cortes Pace Warriors in Win over L.A. Southwest

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College got a great all-around effort in a 115-108 South Coast Conference victory over L.A. Southwest on Wednesday evening at the ECC Gym Complex.

With the win, the Warriors snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Kai Johnson and Aaron Cortes each led the Warriors with 19 points apiece while Cortes also grabbed 14 rebounds with Johnson dishing out seven assists. They led an offense that had five players in double figures and shot 47.4 percent from the field. The Warriors also hit 17-of-46 from beyond the arc.

Along with Johnson and Cortes, Daxen Walton got in on the scoring with 18 points off the bench with all six of his baskets coming from 3-point range. Jedaiah Mortimer scored 13 points and Jackson Bell added 10 en route to the victory.

For the Cougars, Chase McDuffie led all scorers with 36 points on 14-for-20 shooting and 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Kenneth Tyree added 27 points and seven assists with Marques Calcote adding 23 points and Hansen Clarke going for 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth affair as the teams were tied five times and traded the lead on 11 occasions. The Warriors trailed by as many as nine points but, down 104-103, a layup from Tavin Adamson gave the Warriors a 105-104 lead with 3:04 left in regulation. They would never trail again.

The Warriors would finish the game on an 11-4 run to secure the win and snap their skid.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday night with a road game against Cerritos.
