SCC Secures Win in First Game of Season
The Santiago Canyon College Men’s Basketball Team started off the season with a solid victory over Long Beach City College by the score of 82-75.
The Santiago Canyon College Men's Basketball Team started off the season with a solid victory over Long Beach City College by the score of 82-75. After playing a shortened 8 game season in which the Hawks finished 8-0, the team was excited to get a full regular season underway. The Hawks and the Vikings battled throughout the first half with 6 lead changes. The two teams were tied at halftime with 35 points apiece. Freshman guard Drew Yezbak led the Hawks with 11 points at the half, while Aaron Wadman added 10 points. Harrison Wiese led the team with 6 rebounds at the half. Santiago Canyon built a 7-point lead with 12:23 left in the first half, but Long Beach City battled back to tie the score to end the first half.
The second half saw the two teams exchange baskets and defensive stops on a regular basis. The Hawks were able to push out to a 9 point lead with 7:22 left in the game. They would never relinquish the lead after that point and finished strong to end the game. SCC had five players score in double digits. Leading the way was Wadman with 14 points. Freshman Erik Howlin came off the bench to add 13 points, 10 of those in the second half. Returning 1st Team All Conference player, David Agba and Sophomore Preston Sims both chipped in with 12 points. Rounding out the double digit scorers was Yezbak with his 11. Leading the way on the boards was Howlin and Harrison Wiese with 8 rebounds apiece. Wadman led the team with 4 assists.
Santiago Canyon returns to action in the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday as they face Glendale College. Glendale was a 58-51 winner over Santa Ana in the other game of the tournament. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
