LANCASTER - After a disappointing loss in which it blew a 13-point halftime lead against Citrus, the Marauder men's basketball took the court on Saturday and gave the crowd something to cheer about.
D'Mauria Jones knocked down six 3-pointers, including one to close the half and scored a game-high 28 points to lead AVC to a bounce back 86-66 victory over visiting Glendale at Marauder Gymnasium.
"Coach told us that this was an important game and we went out and got it. This is a big win because it keeps us on track (for a potential conference title)," said Jones. "Coach told us if we play like we did in the second half like we did against Citrus that we'll lose. We jsut have to take one game at a time."
With the victory, AVC remains only one game behind Citrus, which defeated Barstow, 85-70, in the race for first place in the Western State Conference. The two teams meet again at Marauder Gymnasium on Feb. 14.
The Marauders had four players score in double figures, including Greg Floyd who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Julian Payton and Angelo Solis each scored 11 points for AVC. The Marauders outscored the Vaqueros 48-32 in the second half. Jesse Burns played solid minutes off the bench for AVC by finishing with eight points, two rebounds and two steals.
Glendale was hot in the first half from 3-point range after it knocked down six, however, the Vaqueros were only 2-of-14 in the second half. AVC shot a blistering 50 percent for the game.
