San Francisco Remains Above the Rim in CCCMBCA Poll
Headed into the final week of the regular season a few conference titles still up for grabs
In the final poll where coaches from around the state have a say, City College of San Francisco remains the state’s top ranked team. Next week’s regional seeding will determine the final CCCMBCA poll. This week marks the end of the regular season, but there is still a lot at stake as a some conference championships remain in play and teams will be making a final push for a regional bid.
State Poll
1. San Francisco (10-0, 26-1) — San Francisco successfully defended its conference title and secured the north’s top seed in the regional playoffs. The Rams, winners of 22 straight games, closes out the regular season with a road game at Skyline and a home game against Ohlone.
2. San Diego City (8-0, 27-2) — San Diego City can wrap up its conference title with a win against Imperial Valley on Wednesday. With the conference title, the Knights figure to secure the south’s top seed in the regionals. The defending state champions have won a program-record 20 straight games. San Diego City will close out the season by hosting San Diego Mesa on Friday.
3. Santa Rosa (14-0, 21-4) — Santa Rosa has won 17 straight games and won the Big 8 Conference title. The Cubs conclude the regular season with home games against Sierra and American River.
4. San Bernardino Valley (8-0, 24-4) — San Bernardino Valley has wrapped up the Pacific Coast-North title, however, the Wolverines have two interesting games left. San Bernardino will hit the road for games against San Diego Miramar and Mt. San Jacinto, two programs which are currently tied for second place. Mt. San Jacinto figures to go into its game with SBVC at 14-14. While, we have MSJC making the playoffs in as play-in game team, a MSJC victory certainly would take the “hold your breath” moment out of the equation.
5. Cerritos (8-0, 23-4) — Cerritos successfully wrapped up its conference title. The Falcons will close out the regular season with games against Los Angeles Harbor and Long Beach City College.
6. Yuba (13-1, 21-5) — Yuba rebounded from a slow start to win the nine-tea Bay Valley Conference title. The 49’ers who are digging on a 12-game win streak close out the regular season with road games against Merritt and playoff-bound Mendocino.
7. Fresno City (11-1, 23-4) — Fresno City clinched a share of the Central Valley Conference title, its 17th consecutive conference championship. The Rams can clinch the outright title on Wednesday when Reedley visits Fresno. A visiting Merced squad will help Fresno close out the season on Saturday.
8. Orange Coast (10-1, 19-7) — Hats off to the Pirates for winning its first men’s basketball championship in 38 years. We wondered if Orange Coast could within stand its final stretch which included games with Saddleback and Fullerton. And the Pirates responded and in the process laid claim to the Orange Empire Conference championship booty. This week, Orange Coast closes out the season with a road game at Riverside, which could have a playoff atmosphere since Tigers will be looking to improve its regional seeding. We still think the conference could send as many as five teams to the regional. Other than Riverside, four of the teams begin the week with 18 wins or more.
9. Citrus (7-1, 24-4) — Citrus begins the week clinging to a one-game lead over Antelope Valley for the Western State-East title. And, as luck would have it, Citrus travels to Lancaster on Wednesday to take on the Marauders. A victory by the Owls would wrap up the title. Just in case, Citrus concludes the season against four-place Barstow, while Antelope Valley concludes the season against third-place Glendale.
10. West Hills (9-3, 18-5) — Here is another good battle — for second place in the Central Valley Conference. West Hills hosts Columbia in a showdown for second place and possibly a top 12 seed in the regionals. Their last meeting resulted in a five-point win by Columbia as Marqueel Hubbard went off for 26 points.
11. East Los Angeles (7-1, 22-5) — Thanks to Mt. San Antonio and Chaffey shooting themselves in the foot last week, East Los Angeles has clinched at least a title for its conference championship. The Huskies can wrap up the title with a win at Los Angeles Trade Tech on Wednesday or by beating Chaffey on the road Friday.
12. Fullerton (8-3, 19-7) — Fullerton, our selection for the conference title, will settle for second place after losing to Orange Coast in overtime last week. The Hornets host Santiago Canyon in their season finale on Tuesday.
13. Butte (8-1, 21-4) — With one game remaining, Butte is in a deadlock with Shasta for the conference title. And, frankly, we think that the two teams will share the conference title. Shasta conclude the season on the road against Redwoods.
14. Foothill (8-3, 19-8) — Foothill missed out on the conference title, but the Owls securely have second-place wrapped up the in the Coast-North. Foothill closes out the season at Canada on Wednesday
15. Allan Hancock (7-1, 20-8) — There is three conferences still up for grabs in the south. This one features Allan Hancock and Ventura which are in a dead heat. Each has two games remaining. Allan Hancock may have the tougher schedule with a road game at Cuesta and home to Oxnard
16. Shasta (8-1, 17-9) — See #13 Butte
17. Modesto (11-3, 18-8) — Modesto can wrap up second place with a win over Cosumnes River or Folsom Lake this week.
18. Ventura (7-1, 19-8) — See #15 Allan Hancock. Ventura closes out the season against Oxnard and Santa Barbara.
19. Gavilan )7-3, 21-4) — Gavilan moves back into the top 20 this week. But Rams are still in a dogfight for the Coast-South title with Cabrillo. Gavilan will begin the week in a dead heat with Cabrillo. Both squads are coming off losses. Gavilan closes the season with games at Hartnell and home to San Jose, while Cabrillo gets DeAnza at home and West Valley on the road.
20. Grossmont (6-2, 17-8) — Mathematically, Grossmont is still alive for a share of the conference title. Realistically, the Griffins should be more concerned with third-place Southwestern. Southwestern, which begins the week a game behind Griffins, visits Grossmont on Friday. Their last meeting was decided by just five points.
