Men’s Basketball Leads Coast to Coast in Season Opener
It is safe to say that the Santiago Canyon College men's basketball team was ready to rumble on Thursday night as they began their season against the Glendale College Vaqueros. The Hawks wasted no time by grabbing a sizeable lead early on and coasting to a 91-70 triumph.
At no point in the contest did the Hawks surrender the lead as they dominated from the opening tip. SCC kept Glendale off the scoreboard entirely up until the 17-minute mark in the first half. Their largest lead came inside the 10-minute mark in the second half as they boasted a 26-point advantage.
Santiago Canyon shot an impressive 52.3 percent from the floor highlighted by freshman guard Tony Colley's 21-point outburst. His distance shooting propelled over the 20+ point mark by going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore guard Damien Parker landed in double-digit scoring as well with 16 points. He added four rebounds and three assists to his scoring total.
Five players recorded at least three assists on the night with sophomore guard Isaiah Arthurton acting as the main facilitator with six assists. Sophomore Joey Longo chipped in nine points and five assists, while sophomore guard Kai Smith added seven points, five assists, one steal and one block.
SCC dominated the bench play as they outscored Glendale's second unit by a 30-7 ratio. Freshman guard Trevor Manning lead the brigade with nine points and four rebounds, while freshman guard Eli Arthurton followed with seven points and a pair of assists.
