Among the 100 men's community college men's basketball teams in California, only one has a better record entering this week than 6-0 College of San Mateo – which needed overtime to beat Contra Costa, 80-78, and sweep its pair of weekend games at the CSM Classic over the weekend. Coast South league member West Valley College won both of its games at College Heights to go to 7-0 on the season.
CSM won the first game at the Classic, 68-67, over Cuesta. Five of the six Bulldogs wins have come by margins of five points or less and include a total of four extra periods played.
San Mateo's Coast North league is proving to be the toughest in the state at 34-10 entering the week, with no team having more than a pair of losses. That includes Skyline (4-2) and Cañada (3-2). Defending state champion City College of San Francisco is 5-1 after having its 32-game winning streak stopped last week by unbeaten (6-0) Fullerton, 105-102, in overtime.
Alex Martin sank a jumper from the side as the OT clock hit zero to win the Contra Costa game. CSM had led, 77-73, after Kiahn Nice's fast break lay-up with 33 seconds left in the extra period but was then called for a technical foul in a situation after Contra Costa fouled trying to get the ball back with ten seconds left. The Comets made two free throws and CSM sank one to leave the Bulldogs up, 78-75. With the ball in hand, Contra Costa's Seneca Willoughby hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to tie it at 78. Then Martin connected on the game winner.
San Mateo was also apparently in control with 34 seconds left in regulation, at 66-62. Jakarri Lindsey of Contra Costa was fouled on a lay-in, however, and completed a 3-point play to narrow the count to 66-65. It was only the third team foul by the Comets, who had to quickly make four more violations before Justin Milch went to the line to complete a 1-and-1 free throw opportunity to make it 68-65 with 15.9 seconds to play. Manuel Landen of Contra Costa then sank a 3-pointer with 1.6 left to send it to overtime.
CSM's Tim Netane led all scorers with 20 points. The 6-7 freshman out of St. Francis high and a San Mateo resident also paces the Bulldogs on the season with a 13.2 pace.
