Defending Champions Open as State's Top-Ranked Team
There has only been three times when a program has been able to repeat as champions. Rancho Santiago Canyon, now Santa Ana, was the last in 1990 and 1991
Defending Champions Open Season Ranked No. 1
Fullerton College opens the 2023-24 season as the state's top-ranked team. The Hornets are coming off a second state championship in three seasons with head coach Perry Webster. Last season, Fullerton held the state's top ranking for the majority of the season.
Such a claim in 2023-24 might be a little tougher for a program. After the two fall showcases many coaches said there were a number of colleges capable of building upon its talent to be a threat for the state title in March.
Four of them appear to be state tournament participants last year — West Valley (No. 3), Sequoias (No. 5), San Francisco City (No. 7), and East Los Angeles (No. 8) — hold four of the top eight spots in the CCCMBCA preseason Top 30. Yuba, behind strong guard play, opens at No. 2. San Diego City, which is back under the tutelage of Mitch Charlens after a year sabbatical, opens at No. 5. No. 6 Allan Hancock, which garnered the No. 17 seed in last year's regional (and lost in the first round), appears to have rebuilt and has a team that is considered a strong contender in 2023-24.
There has only been three times when a program has been able to repeat as champions — Long Beach City in 1958 and 1959; Riverside City, which won three in a row in 1964, 1965, 1966; and Rancho Santiago Canyon, now Santa Ana, in 1990 and 1991. NOTE: Butte repeated as the Small School Division Champion (stopped after 1983) in 1975 and 1976 and Merced matched it in 1978 and 1979.
Below is the remainder of the CCCMBCA Top 30. The 2023-24 season commences on November 1 and concludes March 15-17 with the 3C2A State Championship at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
