RECAP: November 9 Action
#3 West Valley upset #1 Fullerton, snapping the Hornets' 27-game win streak; #4 San Diego City beat #9 Chabot
Highlights of action from November 9:
Ohlone 108, Solano 96 — Ohlone had six players, including all five players, score in double figures as the Renegades beat Solano. Kayne Gilmore led all scorers with 19 points. Three other players scored 13 points apiece. Solano, which trailed by just two points at halftime, was led Justiz Armstrong-Wilson, who came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points.
Irvine Valley 71, #19 Ventura 53 – Ammon Allan came off the bench to score 21 points and starters Roman Swizek and Jesse Stines poured in 17 and 15 points, respectivelt as Irvine Valley upset #19 Ventura in a first-round game of the Irvine Valley Classic. Irvine Valley advances to the finals where the Lasers will take on #17 Cerritos, a winner over Canyons. Ventura was led by Vernon Henry with 12 points.
LA Harbor 64, Southwestern 60 — LA Harbor picks up its first win of the season after Elia Mageo scored 18 points and Amir Woodmore adds 13. The Seahawks opened a 24-point halftime lead, but Southwestern rallied in the second half, behind Demond Johnson (13 points) and Quinten Vella (11 points). Southwestern's bench outscored LA Harbor 27 to 16, but it was quite enough.
Mt. San Antonio 85, Glendale 62 — Nick Hopkins recorded 17 points and Jerimiyah Smith added 17 off the bench as Mt. San Antonio beat Glendale to remain undefeated on the season. Mt. San Antonio took a 40-32 halftime lead and then used a 45-point second half to pull away. The Mounties were 28 of 57 from the floor (49 percent), while Glendale struglged, going 18 of 60 from the floor. Glendale's Powell Mousaian led the Vaqs.
Victor Valley 81, Grossmont 79 — Despite 31 points from Amari Leflore, Grossmont, which scored 50 second-half points, fell to Victor Valley. Victor Valley countered with 12 rebounds and 23 poiints from Mardochee Sambou, 13 of his points coming from the free throw line, and 21 points from Jordan Malveaux. Sheldon Grant grabbed 11 rebounds, 9 on the defensive end.
#17 Cerritos 69, Canyons 56 — Cerritos received 31 points off the bench to help lead them to a win over College of the Canyons in the first round of the Irvine Valley Classic. Cerritos was led by Blake Brewer with 17 points. Teammate Taeo Thomas added 13. Canyons Mason Savery led all scorers with 22 points.
#4 San Diego City 89, #9 Chabot 74 — Playing its first home contest, San Diego City rolled past top-10 Chabot. The Knights, who are back under head coach Mitch Charlens, dominated from the opening tipoff, eventually opening a 13-point, 49-36, halftime lead. San Diego City was led by KJay Bradley with a game-high 29 points. Teammate Alex Crawford added 20. Chabot, which was coming off a triple overtime win against Fresno City last Saturday, shot just 40 percent from the floor. Starters Noah Thomas and Zach Broadous scored 17 and 15 points, respectively. Makaio Mims came off the bench to add 16. The victory was San Diego City's second over a top-12 team.
#3 West Valley 82, # 1 Fullerton 81 — West Valley dominated the boards, out rebounding Fullerton, 42 to 22. Fullerton, which shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from the three-point line, secured just four offensive rebounds. West Valley received balancing scoring with all five starters scoring, three in double figures. The bench, behind 15 points from Ariya Briscoe, scored 23 of West Valley's 82 points. Three Vikings – Shakir Odunewu (19 points), Jeremiah Dargan (16 points), Baron Bracey (11 points) scored in double figures. Odunewu led West Valley with 11 rebounds. Fullerton's Jeremiah Davis led all scorers with 27 points Teammmate Addy G'Bye came off the bench to add 23 on 8 of 10 shooting (4 of 6 and 3-3 on free throws).
