Love Affair with the Game Leads McCarthy to CCCMBCA HOF
McCarthy had a strong working relation with the CCCMBCA
Remy McCarthy has had a nearly 50-year love affair with the game of basketball.
In 1979, McCarthy began his coaching career as an assistant at Moorpark College. In 1983, he became an assistant at the University of Utah, before being named the head coach at Wenatchee Valley College. In 1988, he returned to Southern California as the head coach at Oxnard College, where served for five years.
In 1994, he became the women’s head coach at Moorpark and a year later an assistant on the men’s program. In 1997, he took the head coach reigns, concluding his career in 2014 after 17 years.
His head coach record at the two California community colleges was 358-277. He was 272-209 at Moorpark College and 86-68 at Oxnard College. He won five conference championships, made 12 post-season appears, finishing with a 13-7 record in the post-season.

He also had a strong working relation with the CCCMBCA during his 22-year California community college career, serving as the Western state-North representative and as the Association’s secretary for 10 years.
He was a three-time Western State Conference Coach of the Year and in 2000 was selected as the CCCMBCA South State Coach of the Year.
McCarthy was a tenured professor of kinesiology and health for Ventura County Community College District from 1987 to 2020.
